Spiritual Musings:  Semper Fidelis by Bob Durfee

During my tour in the United States Marine Corp’s I learned to always put God First and the 14 Leadership traits that helped transform me from a young man into a U.S. Marine.  Here are three of my favorite traits from that list and which have been most beneficial in my life.

1.  God wants us to be dependable to Him and to our families and friends.  The definition of dependability is: the ability to be relied upon to perform duties properly, and being trustworthy to complete a job while putting forth the best possible effort in an attempt to achieve the highest standards of performance.

2.  God wants us to have Integrity to be Honest and Faithful throughout our entire life.  The definition of integrity is: being honest and truthful in what is said and done; putting honesty, sense of duty and sound moral principles above all else.

3.  God wants all of us to be Unselfish to one of another.  The definition of unselfishness is: avoiding making or being comfortable at the expense of others, being considerate.

In the Marine Corp’s we were taught to be a Marine is to Live forever.  The truth is to being a Christian is to live forever in the kingdom.  The Marine Corp’s Motto is a Latin phrase, Semper Fidelis, which means Always Faithful.  We should always be Faithful to God, our Family’s and Friends, to our Country, and to ourselves.

Advice for 2012 from the pen of John Eldredge:

Ask Jesus, What is the theme of this year, Lord?

I do this every January 1st, and it has proven a mighty rescue many times over.  Usually Jesus will say one simple thing.  Three years ago it was, “Love.”  And all through the year, I found myself needing to return to the simple truth of love.  It helped to orient me; it helped me to interpret things.  Two years ago it was, “Restoration,” and that proved to be the year I took a short sabbatical and sought the restoration I needed.  Last year it was, “My glory,” and wow–it was the year of Beautiful Outlaw (John’s most recent book) and I could say a hundred things about how “My glory” proved true.  So ask Jesus, What is the theme of this year, Lord?  And when he speaks, write it down!  Post it somewhere you will see it often.  In very big letters.  (Come and hear John speak during our monthly movie night.  You will be glad and blessed that you did!)

Purchase John’s book “Beautiful Outlaw” at Amazon, Christian Book Distributors, Barnes and Nobel, or your local Family Christian book store
